RTI activist seeks govt protection after assault
Chennai: A Right To Information (RTI) activist, who was allegedly assaulted by supporters of a panchayat president in Marakkanam a week ago, sought
protection from the state government on Monday (20-09-2010).
Chandran, a final-year B.Pharm student in a private college in
Kancheepuram, alleged that he was assaulted on September 11 as he had filed
an RTI application on August 28 seeking details of expenses incurred by the
local body, specifically towards provision of water, road laying and
installation of streetlights from 1996 to 2010.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Chandran said the police should have
taken action against his attackers, but instead they had arrested him based
on a complaint that he had intimidated the panchayat president. Having spent
six days in prison, he was released on bail a couple of days ago.
Chandran alleged that the police were hand-in-glove with the supporters
of the panchayat president in encouraging the assault and sought protection
from the state government as he and his family were being threatened.
Chandran said he was yet to receive a response on the RTI application he
had filed.
